As part of the mission to increase community well-being, KMP is working with local health clinics and schools around the project area to implement health and environment-related activities.

These activities are carried out by Bellini Simangunsong, Katingan Mentaya Project’s Public Health Specialist, who is currently working in developing health programmes for villagers and organizing health education programmes in schools around the project zone.

“Having experienced low access to healthcare and health services,” explained Bellini, “public health has been a concern for local communities for a long time.” In 2018, Katingan Mentaya Project introduced health initiatives in local health clinics to combat these problems that range from training and mentoring cadres (health volunteers), implementing health programmes such as food supplements for children under five and elderly in health clinics and equip health clinics with basic health equipment. In 2019, the initiative expanded to include schools through the implementation of educational programmes regarding health and the environment. “Introducing conservative action and sustainable living amongst children is at the core of our environmental program," says Bellini, “and schools plays an important role in the formation of children's positive attitudes toward the environment.”

Every month, Bellini visits schools around the project zone to implement the educational programme. In each school, Bellini spends around 3 hours facilitating a class to learn about hygiene and healthy sustainable living, such as hand washing and clean living. Each visit ends with a hands-on practice session on waste management, such as recycling and wastes segregation exercies, that are aimed to form long term change within the school while involving active participation from teachers, parents, and students alike.

Public health initiatives are important in order to empower communities and assume responsibility for their well-being through increased access to health acces and information. Katingan Mentaya Project believes that better health services and better acces to health are the keys to long- term improvement of social welfare. To this day, Katingan Mentaya Project continues to strive a positive impact in the health and quality of life of the community.
