Masrihin is currently working as Katingan Mentaya Project’s Logistic staff, organizing transportation and infrastructure operations in and around the project area every day.

Despite his busy schedule, Masrihin makes sure to spend his free time studying to achieve his high school degree. The distribution of quality education for all people is part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched by the United Nations. Listed in the fourth point, this goal seeks to ensure that everyone can receive 9 years of compulsory education in 2030. Katingan Mentaya Project continues to work to achieve this goal, one of which is through opening access for its employees to obtain optimal education.

Masrihin’s obsession to achieve his high school degree had started since he graduated middle school. At the time, his family had not been able to fund his high school education, as such, Masrihin had begun working instead. Even so, Masrihin has slowly but surely set aside parts of his savings to fund for a test for a high school degree in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan. Through Katingan Mentaya Project’s High School Equivalent Program, Masrihin is able to have an opportunity to take part in non-formal learning activities which are held 2-3 times every week and take the high school equivalency exam for free.

"Alhamdulillah, I am greatly helped by the program and am now even more motivated to give the best for the project," said Masrihin. In the future, the High School Equivalent Program will serve and help more Katingan Mentaya Project staff to ensure optimal education and equality in educational opportunities for each individual.

Two other staff, Ijul and Agus. experienced a similar situation. Tight finances meant the two were unable to finish his education at the senior high school level. To make ends meet, they work as the project’s firefighters. However, with KMP’s High School Equivalent Program they both are able to achieve their goal of having a recognized education certificate.

“I want to change my life for the better,” said Agus. The Katingan Mentaya Project believes that education is the key to a better future, and the project will therefore continue to support its employees in their further studies.
