Katingan Mentaya Project has initiated a repairment project for the bridge to better insure the safety and ease of access for villagers.
The Kelampan Besar River stretches northbound from the Java Sea towards the city of Sampit, Central Kalimantan. The river is a lifeline to many, providing water to surrounding ecosystems and leeway for various transportations. At some locations, the river divides lands at 5 to 6 meters at a time, making it difficult for people to reach one point to another, as told by villagers of Bapinang HilirVillage.
Bapinang Hilir is a village with a population of 1.635. Located in Pulau Hanaut, KotawaringinTimur Regency, Central Kalimantan, the village mostly relies on agriculture as a primary source of income. Residing near the Kelampan BesarRiver, Bapinang Hilir and its neighbouring villages rely on a sole wooden bridge to access integral public facilities, such as schools, health centres, and mosques. Even more so, the bridge has become a key to much of the villages’ economy, providing access to marketplaces where villagers are able to sell and obtain produce.

Despite its importance, the bridge has shown to be a victim of the test of time. Its wooden beams have proven to become vulnerable as the nails have rusted overtime, its structure sways under each vehicle that passes. Avoiding the bridge entirely would prove to be costly timewise, as the next accessible bridge is located 5 kilometers away. Katingan Mentaya Project has initiated a repairment project for the bridge to better insure the safety and ease of access for villagers.

Abdul Halim (60), a farmer from BapinangHilir, has noticed considerable changes after the repair project. The bridge is now sturdy and safe to travel on as it no longer sways in each passing vehicle. Moreover, the bridge now serves as a leisure spot for villagers as the repair project provides walkways and seatings for walkers and passerbys. Halim and the villagers of BapinangHilir are now able to carry out their day to day activities connected with the rest of PulauHanaut.
