800 farmers turn to a sustainable solution for increased productivity.
In the past 2 years, through our Agroecology Farming Program (Sekolah Tani Agroekologi), we have been working with 800 farmers to promote a burn and chemical free (Tanpa Bakar, Tanpa Kimia) farming approach; as a way to reduce the traditional slash and burn. The land owned by the farmers accumulates to 780 hectares. Slash and burn, the initial problem, brings significant detriment to the soil’s fertility in the long term; eventually forcing farmers to find new land to carry out their work.

Aliansyah is one of many that found success in his harvests through the application of this program. Having oranges, yardlong beans, chilli peppers and many more types of vegetables as his produce. “Prior to 2020, I was a non-organic farmer and the results of my labour came far below my expectations. The soil is ruined due to the continuous application of chemicals. The maintenance cost was more than double my earnings from the harvest. I was very close to quitting, but then I was introduced to RMU’s agroecology farming program and was asked to see the work that had already been done. I saw the work that was already in place and saw how great the harvests were. After joining the program, my harvests were amazing and I am very happy with my oranges. Within 3 months, I can harvest up to 1 tonne of oranges.

” Promoting a burn and chemical free farming approach is one of the methods to fight climate change. Educating and working together with communities is key. Transitioning to a sustainable method while ensuring an increase in productivity for the farmers may determine this as a long term alternative. This transition is no easy feat, however it is a solution necessary for the sustainability of forests.
