A one-year program to deliver food supplements for expecting and breastfeeding mothers, babies and infants.

In Indonesia, the Integrated Health Services Post (Posyandu) is a community-led initiative that provides maternal and neonatal health services, delivered by volunteers. Its activities include the provision of health information to expecting and breastfeeding mothers and vaccination and food supplements for babies and infants under-five. Volunteers must be creative in generating funding and developing the activities of the Posyandu.

In early 2017, the Katingan Mentaya Project (KMP) and the volunteers of the Posyandu in Mentaya Sebrang village rolled out a one-year program to deliver food supplements for expecting and breastfeeding mothers, babies and infants under-five. Murni, 46, one of the volunteers, came up with an idea to set aside the excess fund from the program to develop a community business project to finance the continuation of the program independently.

“I just graduated from KMP’s agroecology school and I had some empty plots of land. So I could apply my new knowledge,” said Murni. “We set aside several hundred thousand rupiahs to buy seeds. We decided to grow Dayak onions organically because they achieve quite a high price,” she added. Four months after planting, the Posyandu already reaped the benefits of three harvests, the onions were sold to finance the food supplement program. “From this small investment, we could already fund and extend the food supplement program for babies and infants. We are now growing organic eggplants and tapioca to further support the program,” Murni said.
