To increase cattle production, in 2017, with the support of Katingan Mentaya Project (KMP), the community group bought two hectares of grazing land.

In cattle farming, the open grazing system is known to be superior to the enclosure system. However, small cattle farms in Juhanjang lack grazing land. When an independent community group was formed in the village, it prioritized the procurement of grazing land and the improvement of cattle management as its focus. “To date, cattle farmers in Juhanjang face difficulties in breeding cattle due to the lack of feed and grazing land,” said Dedi, the chair of Juhanjang community group. To increase cattle production, in 2017, with the support of Katingan Mentaya Project (KMP), the community group bought two hectares of grazing land.

To help address the lack of feed, KMP invited Bio Toyota Indonesia to conduct tests on the types of grass that can be grown in Juhanjang. Ten grass species were tested on four types of soil (aqueous, peatlands, sandy, and mineral), resulting in four nappier grass species being recommended . Bio Toyota Indonesia also provided training to farmers on the use of nappier grass as a source of biofuel. “We did not only find solutions to the land grazing problem, but we also become smarter in feed management,” Dedi added.
