KMP helped to develop a soft loan program through the community group Mendawai Sejahtera
Many of the women in Mendawai village work in the small business sector with minimum amounts of capital. Some of them started their businesses by selling cell phone credits, clothes, vegetables at the market, or founded small grocery stores. However, their businesses struggle to flourish since they face financial challenges and have no access to the banking system as an alternative financial source. The Katingan Mentaya Project (KMP) helped to develop a soft loan program through the community group Mendawai Sejahtera. The program is a commitment by KMP to develop the village communities around the project zone. The loan recipients can use funding to support the development of their business, or for personal matters, such as medical needs or school fees.

After receiving a 1 million rupiah (circa USD 75) credit, Esti, 34, no longer relies on only selling cakes and fritters, but now sells drinks and breakfast meals at a school stall close to her house. Her life is slowly beginning to change. The repaid loan is rotated among other members of the Mendawai Sejahtera group. The rolling credit reaches other women in Mendawai who want to start or grow their businesses. The group manages to double its initial credit, in the amount of 20 million rupiah, to over 40 million rupiah within one year.
