The Katingan Mentaya Project Fire Management and Mitigation Report, 2024 highlights the Indonesian peat swamp forest project’s work to dramatically cut the threat of fires in and around the protected forest area.

The multilayered fire management and mitigation strategy brings together sophisticated, data-driven risk mapping, high-resolution satellite monitoring, rapid communications, and comprehensive community training programmes.

In 2023, the project employed just under 1400 permanent and seasonal firefighters from RMU and local villages.

Wildfire is a devastating reality for life across the tropics, which takes a heavy toll on human health, economic growth, and the natural world. As a conservation project, mitigating the threats of fire is crucial to preventing emissions and ensuring permanence.

This latest report sets out the threats, the measures taken by the project partners – Permian Global and Rimba Makmur Utama – to eliminate the threats, and the achievements that have been made as the programme has developed.

The report also includes cases studies on state-of-the-art technologies used in the project and third-party research that has assessed the effectiveness of project fire management.
