Becoming a successful organic farmers today takes a wide variety of skills, from soil management and seed production to marketing and business planning. To help develop sustainable agriculture, the Katingan Mentaya Project brought 7 aspiring farmers from around the project zone to Yogyakarta to learn those important skills. Yogyakarta, in central Java, is famous for agricultural ecotourism and has advance organic farming practices and environmentally friendly agriculture. The farm, 10 minutes from Yogyakarta city center, opens its doors to visitors and provides training for organic farming and healthy food preparation.

Out of the seven farmers undergoing the training, only one, M. Zainudin, who has developed organic farming on his land in Mentaya Seberang village. The other six farmers are still undertaking traditional farming using chemical fertilizers. In the training, through discussions and demonstrations on topics such as organic crop and livestock production, soil science, business planning, and direct marketing, these farmers received a thorough education in organic small farm management. Katingan-Mentaya farmers also learned to conduct on-farm research through seed variety trials, while field trips allowed farmers to see a variety of farming styles and talk to Java’s experienced farmers.

Katingan-Mentaya farmers were also assisted in developing a personal farm business plan where their farm goals were discussed and built upon. Farmers also learned how to operate tractors, make compost, manage the farm’s livestock, and much more. With the skills and knowledge gained and a business plan in hand, these farmers now know what it will take to start or manage their own small organic farm.
