To reduce poverty and inequality while promoting decent work and economic growth, Katingan Mentaya Project has developed and implemented a microfinance programme managed by local communities in villages around the project area. Such loans are given by submitting a proposal, which is then reviewed by the head of local cooperative in the village.
Katingan Mentaya Project’s microfinance programme is currently being run in 3 different villages around the project area. In Mekarti Jaya village, of East Kotawaringin, there are around 50 recipients to the microfinance programme. One of the recipients, Dessy, is a shop owner utilizing part of her home to sell numerous day-to-day household commodities. Dessy’s inner ambition was to start a culinary business, as she was skilled in crafting traditional cookies, though she had trouble in acquiring capital to start her business.
Dessy heard of Katingan Mentaya Project’s microfinance programme through her neighbours, and quickly submitted a proposal of her own. Dessy’s loan application was approved in time for Eid-Fitr, which was when traditional cookies are most highly consumed and purchased in Indonesia.
Dessy’s business has since become very successful. Now, she sells up to 10 jars of traditional cookies each day and her house always smells faintly of the sweet treats.
