Before entering dry season in 2020, Katingan Mentaya Project has published two comic books, available for school children in and around the concession area, in order to raise awareness on peatland forest fires and its prevention efforts. The comic books follow the story of Jenta and Agau, a pair of siblings from Katingan district, as they venture into the diverse peatland forests of Katingan and discover the risks to forest fires.
The comic books are a way to expand Katingan Mentaya Project’s outreach and target audience by means of creative and new strategies. Comic books were chosen as a medium, as they are able to capture children’s interests while catering to their language without minimizing the importance of the message. The comic books were sent to over 40 schools in and around the concession area, reaching a total of 4,000 school children. Widya, who is a 6th grader at Public Elementary School (SDN) 02 Babaluh has expressed her excitement, asking “When will the next series in the comic be released?”
Children have a major role in being spokepersons against forest fires in family. In this case, Katingan Mentaya Projects hopes that children could be a big influence on their parents and that many would go home and continue the message of preventing irresponsible forest burning. Katingan Mentaya Project plans to continue this effort with a next installment, aiming for public release and cooperation with local reading parks and libraries.
Katingan Mentaya Project continues to work on their environment awareness program for children and communities, while working with teachers by guiding them how to best educate fire prevention strategies. Educating younger generation will also help establish new behavior to counter conventional agriculture practices that practice slash and burn land clearance.
