Katingan Mentaya Project is currently facilitating mobile health clinic to reach rural communities who live in villages along the river.
The increase in positive cases of COVID-19 in Kotawaringin Timur and Katingan districts, of Central Kalimantan, is a major factor in people’s reluctance to come to local health centres or hospitals for treatment and health check-ups, especially for the elderly who are more susceptible to transmission. With access to hospitals that are far away and difficult to reach, villagers need to pay additional transportation costs on top of the pandemic’s significant impact on their economy.

For this reason, Katingan Mentaya Project is currently facilitating mobile health clinic to reach rural communities who live in villages along the river. Using a klotok (a type of large boat), Katingan Mentaya Project’s team escorts doctors, health workers, and health cadres from the Pulau Hanaut Health Center to Serambut Besar and Serambut Kecil villages to help the community receive health services during the pandemic. Before the mobile clinic arrived, the project team had coordinated with village officials regarding the arrival of health workers, to which the village officials, represented by a cadre, disseminated the information to surrounding communities. On Monday, 21 September 2020 morning, the information was also spread through use of loudspeakers installed at the village’s Serambut Mosque.

Among the health services provided, the mobile clinic provided health check-ups for hypertension, cholesterol, blood sugar, uric acid, and other health complaints, as well as providing consulting services for patients. In addition to that, the mobile clinic team also conducted socialization on the prevention of COVID-19 transmission. There were more than 50 patients, consisting of adults and elderlies, who came for a check-up.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Katingan Mentaya Project routinely provides local communities with assistance in an effort to break the chain of COVID-19 transmission. In the future, Katingan Mentaya Project hopes to be able to serve more people in areas that are difficult to reach and facilitate them with proper health services. By continuing to be creative in our approaches, Katingan Mentaya Project upholds Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on collaboration and innovation in the local level.
