Katingan Mentaya Project, as part of its community development efforts, aims to foster literacy, learning, and a love of reading for schoolchildren. And use the power of books to address one of the world’s most urgent issues: the environment. As part of these efforts, Katingan Mentaya Project has provided a number of reading corners for elementary schools to help them access high quality and engaging books about nature and the environment. The available books vary in range, from storybooks, comics, to educational books. The books offer an insight into wildlife extinction, global warming, the beauty of nature, environmental science, recycling and other sustainability efforts to better widen the schoolchildren’s worldview and spark their interest towards environmental advocacy.
Each KMP Reading Corner is decorated to portray a house, with each window becoming respective shelves to store the books. One reading corner may provide up to 40 books at a time. Currently, Katingan Mentaya Project has established two reading corners in two schools and donated hundreds of books and plans to expand the initiative to three more schools in the near future.
You can also make an impact in our literacy initiative. You can donate books directly to the school with our staff, or you can also drop off/send the books to our offices in Bogor and Sampit.
