Katingan Mentaya Project facilitated 2 hand tractors to Satiruk Village to fight open agricultural burning.
With the ongoing problem of open agricultural burning still widespread throughout the forests of Indonesia, Katingan Mentaya Project is taking part in its elimination by means of mechanization technology, facilitating hand tractors for local villages.
For the longest time, open agricultural burning has been the cheaper and less time-consuming option to clear lands. As such, the act has been one of the biggest and most abundant causes of forest fires. On one hand, open agriculture burning has been the cause for uncountable loss and considerable damage to the ecosystem, on the other, villagers and local communities alike need an efficient way to farm that does not take too much time or capital. Katingan Mentaya Project has offered a solution to one of the villages currently facing the problem in the form of mechanization technology.
Satiruk Village is located within the project area. The village, much like the handful of other villages surrounding the project area, are prone to forest fires during dry season due to heat and the use of open agricultural burning to open land for farming. Through a long process of open discussions with village officials, KMP facilitated the village with 2 hand tractors to help local farmers open lands in a less time-consuming manner. Having facilitated two hand tractors to the village, farmers are able to use the equipment communally, saving a significant amount of costs.
“The mechanization in Satiruk Village is running effectively,” explained Taka, Katingan Mentaya Project’s Community Development Staff, “The method itself, which is using hand tractors, is environmentally friendly because it maintains organic matter within the soil”. So far, the 22 farmers in the village have cleared 10 hectares of land. “Katingan Mentaya Project’s support has helped us, farmers, to clear lands quickly,” Misran admitted, “We were able to open 10 hectares of land in 3 days whereas traditional equipment, such as hoes, might take up to months of labour.”
Combating forest fires is a long process, filled with continuous change and adaptation. Realizing this, Katingan Mentaya Project is doing what it can to stimulate the process in order to create the change needed for a better environment.
