In order to improve public health services, especially in remote areas that lack road access, KMP has provided a mobile floating clinic for 3 villages within the sub-district of Kamipang.
Access to healthcare is a known universal right for people of all ages, gender, social, and cultural backgrounds. Though well understood worldwide, ensuring such access is usually clouded by a variety of challenges and external factors, both social or physical. Within Katingan Mentaya Project’s project area, for example, access to adequate healthcare continues to be a challenge for a handful of villages due to lack of roads and local health centres. Now with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing into 2021, access to quality healthcare is more important than ever.
In order to improve public health services, especially in remote areas that lack road access, Katingan Mentaya Project provided a mobile floating clinic for 3 villages within the sub-district of Kamipang, Katingan District. The service was run for 3 days, from February 25th to 27th 2021, and provided healthcare services for 43 villagers in Galinggang Village, 63 in Tampelas Village, and 88 in Telaga Village.

“It is called the mobile floating clinic because we use river transportation routes and use kelotok, a type of traditional boat native to Borneo, to reach remote areas," explained Katingan Mentaya Project’s Public Health Specialist, Bellini Simangunsong. Supporting the service, Katingan Mentaya Project also worked with local health clinics and health cadres, the local government, and Baun Bango Public Health Centre in order to deliver high quality healthcare that is both free and accessible.
Among the health services provided, the mobile floating clinic provided health check-ups for cholesterol, blood sugar, uric acid, and other health complaints, as well as providing consulting services for villagers while adhering to local health protocols for the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2020, Katingan Mentaya Project had also provided mobile floating clinics for Pulau Hanaut sub-district.
Regarding the future, Bellini remains optimistic, stating, “Our hope is that with this health service, the community will care more about their health and can feel the presence of Katingan Mentaya Project in providing them services in the health sector.”
