The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was selected to replace Hoven’s carp.

The villagers of Tumbang Runen, in the Kamipang district, have undertaken fish aquaculture for many years. This involves using an area of the Katingan river close to there their homes to cultivate Hoven’s carp (Leptobarbus hoevenii), a native species of Kalimantan. However, the villagers face many challenges in cultivating this fish, such as its difficulty to adapt and slow growth. “The harvesting period is about one year, and the growth over one year is only 500 gram,” said Nasrulah, 42, a fish farmer in Tumbang Runen. “Many of our friends were reluctant to continue cultivating Hoven’s carp and chose other types of fish,” Nasrulah added.

Through discussions with the community, facilitated by the Katingan Mentaya Project (KMP), the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was selected to replace Hoven’s carp. This was because the Nile tilapia grows quickly, can be harvested in four months, can adapt well, with relatively low costs of feed. KMP supports the procurement of fish eggs, the provision of technical assistance, routine controls, and in finding buyers for the fish in Kasongan.

Although fish cultivation is sensitive to weather conditions, such as rain, which affect the quality and quantity of water, Nasrulah is already harvesting three times this year. This has increased his and his friends’ family incomes. He has also gained important knowledge. “We were taught to monitor the growth of our fish etc., everyday. We also have a feeding schedule. Now everything is carefully managed.”
