The existence of seed nurseries are beneficial to both local communities and the environment. KMP is partnering with Parupuk Village’s women farmer groups in the management of plant nurseries.
A seed nursery is a place or area designated for processing seeds into a more matured or desired form, most commonly into a seedling. The products of such nurseries are then used for a variety of functions, such as being replanted for conservation efforts or sold for economic reasons. When processed with the proper methods, these nurseries will be able to produce quality seedlings in large quantities. This explains why the existence of seed nurseries are beneficial to both local communities and the environment. Knowing this, Katingan Mentaya Project is partnering with Parupuk Village’s farmer groups in the management of plant nurseries.

The partnership was established in order to improve the quality of life and economic income of the villagers of Parupuk Village, as well as to achieve sustainable forest management. KMP had at first initiated the partnership in 2015, but due to large floods at the time, the plan had not been able to follow through and gone as expected. It has since been in motion when on February 19-20th, Katingan Mentaya Project held a refresher training for Parupuk Village’s farmers. The training was attended by 21 farmers who were given knowledge on nursery development and planning, preparation of planting media, the process of supplying seeds, and seed maintenance.
Once the farmers are able to implement said knowledge on the village’s seed nursery, they are then able to sell their seedlings to the local government, companies, or institutions that are engaged in rehabilitation. "Hopefully, this nursery will help the economy of Parupuk Village in a sustainable manner, especially for female farmers," said Wardoyo, KMP Forest Village Community Empowerment staff.
Katingan Mentaya Project will continue to support Parupuk Village’s farmers through facilitating seeds and providing capital for the farmers. Regarding the future, Wardoyo’s hopes remain high, stating, "In the future, this nursery will become an independent nursery that does not only develop forest plant seeds, but also vegetables and fruit plants.”
