This year, the forest fire prevention and patrol activities in Telaga Village, Central Kalimantan, look different.
Telaga Village Fire Fighters, which consist of 39 men have now welcomed 6 women in their team. Titin was born and raised in Telaga Village and is a member of the team patrolling the Klaru River estuary area. COVID-19 has greatly impacted the economy of her family, as a result, Titin and many women from Telaga Village were forced to find alternative sources of income to support their respective families. Therefore, when the recruitment of patrol members was carried out in early June 2020, Titin and her friends, Ami, Jumila, Cica, Zakiah and Misbah, volunteered.
Among the skills they possess, the six women from the Telaga Village are proficient at driving and navigating boats. The skill is much appreciated, as the day-to-day schedule requires patrols to leave the village and venture deep into small rivers in the forest. Though the long distances are not ideal, such conditions do not dampen the enthusiasm of Titin and her friends. These women carry out their duties cheerfully everyday, becoming unique voices within the team and their daily activities.
Katingan Mentaya Project has and will continue to support activities that enforce fair opportunities for women and therefore gives high appreciation to the women who joined the Telaga Village Fire Patrols. In the future, Titin hopes for the end of man- made forest fires and for bigger participation from all levels of society toward forest fire prevention. Closing her story, Titin also hopes for a smog-free Kalimantan and for its skies to remain blue.
