In an industry long dominated by men, two women foresters, Irma and Mutia, stand out amid a veritable forest of peers.

Forestry has frequently been considered a sector dominated by men, but at Katingan Mentaya Project, we have been actively supporting gender equality by providing careers for women, such as building programs to improve opportunities for women and encouraging them to work for our projects.

Mutia and Irma are both currently working as Katingan Mentaya Project’s Biodiversity staff, "[Mutia and Irma] are among women in our company who can carry out this hard work with a steady routine. They are excellent in the field, where they execute biodiversity monitoring, biodiversity data analysis, and other forest related activities, while also producing written reports with precision” says Meyner Nusawalo, KMP Protection and Enforcement Manager as their supervisor, “I feel that we do better work with their valuable inputs. They are both still young, so I expect a lot from them in the future.”

Though challenging, both Mutia and Irma view their work fulfilling albeit a few challenges, “What is difficult is when I have to do a survey in the forest with a team of men who are much more experienced and physically fit. In such situations, I have to adjust so that the work can be completed on time. But my male teammates really care about my condition and they always make sure that I'm okay. " said Mutia, with Irma’s approval.

“Women must be brave enough to reach their dreams, even though those dreams are in a place dominated by men. Luckily I am currently working here, in a place that gives women the opportunity to participate, develop themselves and realize their dreams, ”concluded Mutia.

Katingan Mentaya Project is committed to developing our workforce to be more inclusive towards women and young talents, like Mutia and Irma. To that end, we have invested significant time and resources in employee training and development.
